The Mission Over Baghdad

In April 2003, Air Force Captain Kim Campbell was piloting an A-10 Thunderbolt II on a close air support mission over Baghdad, Iraq. During the flight, heavy anti-aircraft fire struck her aircraft, causing severe damage. A missile strike disabled both hydraulic systems and caused significant structural damage to the right stabilizer and hundreds of holes in the fuselage and wings.

Flying on Manual Control

• Loss of Hydraulics: With the primary and backup hydraulic systems gone, standard flight controls ceased to function normally.

• Switching to Manual Reversion: Campbell managed to transition the aircraft into manual reversion mode, a backup system using mechanical cables and manual cranks to control the pitch and roll.

• The 300-Mile Journey: Rather than ejecting over hostile territory, she navigated the severely damaged jet on a challenging 300-mile flight back to base.

• A Safe Landing: Thanks to her composure, extensive training, and the incredible durability of the A-10, she successfully executed a safe landing.
